5 of the Best Beaches in NYC

New York City has a ton of things to do with kids during the summer months, including a visit to the beach! We have rounded up our top 5 beaches in NYC. Look out your sunglasses – it’s beach season!

CONEY ISLAND (Brooklyn)
Hit this boardwalk in Brooklyn for some good old fashioned family fun – not only is Coney Island home to Luna Park (think roller-coasters, hot dogs and the famous Deno’s Wonder Wheel) and the New York Aquarium, it also is home to three miles of lovely sandy shores. A word of warning though, it tends to get busy on the sand on the weekends.

Check out HERE what’s happening this summer on Coney Island (the annual mermaid parade, Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest, and so much more).

BRIGHTON BEACH (Brooklyn)
Just a hop, skip and a jump from Coney – but you would think it’s a world away. It’s another well known beach along the Coney Island peninsula but is much quieter than Coney. It has lots of family friendly activities on hand like bike rides, playgrounds, and many family-friendly restaurants.

ROCKAWAY BEACH (Queens)
This is a largest urban beach in the US, is perfect for surfers, and is located on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, NY. Don’t have your own board? No problem, you can rent one here, along with booking some surf lessons too. As this is surfers paradise here, is also means that the waves can be rough – keep your kids safe in the water here. A high point is that there are many food trucks serving tasty food at a reasonable price. If your kid gets fed up with the sand, then no problem as there are also 7 playgrounds – that’s more than enough to keep any little one having fun!

JACOB RIIS BEACH (Queens)
Accessible by car, subway, bus, NYC Beach Bus (weekends only) or the ferry, this destination is a great one for families. Rent bikes, play sports on the beach, eat great food (with extensive options from Riis Park Beach Bazaar) or bbq/picnic like a pro on the boardwalk. It’s also a great place to fly a kite!

ORCHARD BEACH (Bronx)
This man-made beach is the sole public beach in the Bronx – it’s crescent-shaped looks out over the Long Island Sound. It boasts all of the usual things that families love – playparks, good food, sports (basketball, volleyball, handball etc). To get to Orchard Beach, take the 6 train to Pelham Bay Park, and then get on a bus to Orchard Beach
